Open source

The video repair engine that runs in your browser is built on open-source software, and its complete source code is public.

The repair engine

FootageRescue repairs Sony .RSV files with untrunc, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser, plus our changes and a small JavaScript layer. Like untrunc, the engine is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later.

Its complete source code, with the list of our changes and the scripts to rebuild it exactly, is here: github.com/aletripodi/footagerescue-engine. Every version published there says which version of this site it comes from.

You may download, study, change and share the engine under the terms of the GPL. The engine files this site serves also carry their licence (LICENSE.txt) and a note on where to find the source (SOURCE.txt).

Components and licences

  • untrunc – rebuilds the index of interrupted recordings. GPL-2.0 (or later). github.com/anthwlock/untrunc
  • FFmpeg 3.3.9 (libavformat, libavcodec, libavutil) – reads and decodes the video and audio while the file is analysed. LGPL-2.1 (or later), built with no GPL or non-free parts. ffmpeg.org
  • Emscripten 6.0.9 – compiles the engine to WebAssembly and provides its runtime code. MIT (Emscripten is dual-licensed MIT and University of Illinois/NCSA). emscripten.org
  • Runtime libraries bundled by Emscripten – musl libc (MIT) and libc++ / libc++abi (Apache-2.0 with LLVM exception).

The rest of the site

The website, the free WAV repair tool, the preview and the checkout are our own code. They are separate programs that use the engine only through its public interface.
